Drone Recommendations from the XBOOM Operations Team

Since drone pilots frequently inquire about the best models to consider, our FG Operations Team has carefully compiled insights and recommendations for 2023. Whether you’re a seasoned pilot, a beginner, or simply contemplating entering the commercial drone piloting world, here’s a helpful guide to assist you in choosing the perfect drone.

General Tips

Firstly, regarding batteries, it’s crucial to always carry at least four batteries along with a portable charger, regardless of the drone model you use. Additionally, when purchasing new drones, consider investing in DJI Care Refresh. This insurance option not only covers damage from crashes but also typically guarantees drone replacement within a week, which can save you valuable downtime.

Moreover, mapping capabilities are a vital feature for any commercial drone. This function allows the drone to execute automated flight patterns for precise image capture. At FlyGuys, this functionality is essential for the majority of our missions. Therefore, we rely on DroneDeploy as our primary software for these tasks, as it integrates seamlessly with our operational needs. For further details, be sure to check out DroneDeploy.

Drone Recommendations by Experience Level

  • Mavic Air 2S: Ideal for Beginners and as a Backup Drone
  • Affordability: The Mavic Air 2S is an excellent entry-level professional drone that won’t break the bank.
  • Camera Quality: Equipped with a 20-megapixel camera, it meets the new standard for commercial drone photography, surpassing older models with 12MP cameras.
  • Mapping Missions: This model is highly capable of performing automated mapping missions, making it suitable for 90% of the work we handle.

Previously, the DJI Mavic 2 Pro was our go-to recommendation until it was discontinued. DJI replaced it with the Mavic 3 (Classic) and the Mavic Air 2S. The Mavic 3 (Classic) serves well for missions that require manual capture, but lacks the SDK for automated mapping missions. For pilots needing that capability, DJI later introduced the Mavic 3 Enterprise version, which we’ll discuss further.

The Mavic Air 2S essentially serves as the LITE version of the Mavic 3 (Classic) but includes the critical mapping capability, making it an exceptional choice for pilots starting in the commercial drone space or needing a reliable backup drone.
