What makes it work

Pixhawk Cube Orange+ with ADS-B Carrier Board

The Brain Behind Professional UAVs

The CubePilot Cube Orange+ (HX4-06222) is the most capable autopilot in the CubePilot ecosystem — the direct successor to the industry-standard Cube Black and previously known as Pixhawk 2.1. Built for commercial system integrators, UAS manufacturers, and demanding professional operators, it combines a high-performance processor, redundant sensor architecture, and integrated airspace awareness in a compact, ruggedised module.

STM32H757: Built for Complex Missions

At the core of the Cube Orange+ is the ARM Cortex-M7 STM32H757 processor — running at 400 MHz with a double-precision FPU, 1 MB RAM, and 2 MB Flash. This is 4× faster than the previous-generation STM32F4 used in the Cube Black, enabling real-time processing of complex flight paths, sensor fusion, and autonomous decision-making without lag. A dedicated STM32F103 failsafe co-processor runs independently to ensure the vehicle can recover even if the main processor encounters an issue.

Triple-Redundant IMUs — Engineered for Reliability

The Cube Orange+ uses three independent IMU units — ICM42688, ICM20948, and ICM20649 — with two sets mechanically vibration-isolated from the frame and a third fixed as a reference. All IMUs are temperature-controlled by onboard heating resistors, keeping sensors at their optimal operating window regardless of ambient temperature. This is why the Cube Orange+ is trusted for missions in environments ranging from high-altitude cold to desert heat, where a single-IMU system would degrade in accuracy.

1090MHz ADS-B IN — Safer Skies for Drone Operations

The ADS-B carrier board integrates a 1090MHz ADS-B receiver from uAvionix, directly on Serial 5. This lets the autopilot receive real-time data — position, altitude, and speed — of any manned aircraft broadcasting ADS-B within range. Using Mission Planner, operators can configure automatic avoidance exclusion zones: if a manned aircraft enters the defined zone, the UAV can be set to automatically manoeuvre clear. For operations near aerodromes, in controlled airspace, or anywhere manned and unmanned traffic co-exist, this is a critical safety layer.

Universal Platform Compatibility

The Cube Orange+ is compatible with virtually every UAV platform type — multirotor, fixed-wing, VTOL, traditional helicopter, rover, boat, and submarine. All inputs and outputs pass through a single 80-pin DF17 connector, making it a true plug-in module for any CubePilot-compatible carrier board. The ADS-B carrier board included in this set is footprint-identical to the standard carrier, so it fits existing frames designed for Cube systems with no modification. It runs both ArduPilot and PX4 firmware, supported by Mission Planner and QGroundControl.

ADSB Carrier Board Features:

The carrier board, a standard component of the Cube Orange Plus, is now integrated with a 1090MHz ADS-B receiver. This addition allows the system to gather and process live data about nearby manned aircraft, including their position, altitude, and speed, viewable through Mission Planner. Users have the flexibility to configure their Cube Orange Plus system to initiate automatic avoidance maneuvers for aircraft entering predefined exclusion zones, enhancing safety and operational security.

FAQs for Hex Pixhawk Cube+ Flight Controller Autopilot

Hardware

The Cube Orange+ is the upgraded version of the Cube Orange. It uses the STM32H757 dual-core processor instead of the STM32H753, giving it more processing headroom for complex missions. It also features upgraded Balanced Gyro (BG) IMUs — specifically the ICM42688 and ICM20948 — compared to the ICM20602 and ICM20948 found in the original Cube Orange. The firmware builds for the two models are not cross-compatible; always flash the Orange+ build specifically.

Software

Yes. The Cube Orange+ supports both ArduPilot (Copter, Plane, Rover, Sub, Blimp) and PX4 v1.14+ firmware. For ground control software it works with Mission Planner and QGroundControl. Note that PX4 support for the Orange+ was introduced from v1.14 — earlier PX4 releases do not include an Orange+ board config.

ADS-B

The ADS-B carrier board integrates a uAvionix 1090MHz ADS-B IN receiver (on Serial 5) with a built-in antenna. It receives real-time broadcasts from nearby manned aircraft — including their position, altitude, and speed — and displays this data in Mission Planner. Operators can configure exclusion zones in parameters: if a manned aircraft enters the defined zone, the autopilot can automatically initiate avoidance maneuvers. This is especially important for operations near aerodromes or in shared airspace.

Compatibility

The Cube Orange+ works with virtually every UAV and robotics platform type — multirotor (quad, hex, octo), fixed-wing, VTOL, traditional helicopter, rover, boat, submarine, and general robotics. All I/O passes through a single 80-pin DF17 connector, making it compatible with any CubePilot carrier board. It also supports external GPS modules such as the Here3+, Here4, and any ArduPilot-compatible GNSS unit.

Navigation

No — the Cube Orange+ module itself does not include a built-in GNSS receiver. GPS/GNSS is provided by a separate external module connected via the GPS1 or GPS2 port on the carrier board. CubePilot's own Here3+ and Here4 RTK modules are popular choices and connect directly via CAN. Any ArduPilot or PX4-compatible GNSS unit will work. The ADS-B carrier board included in this set has dedicated GPS port connectors ready for your chosen module.
